Animals in groups
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Animals in groups" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers NGSS 3-LS2-1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on ecosystems, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and animal groups never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

How do I use this worksheet?
Start with something students can look at or think about: a photo, a short video, a jar on the windowsill, or a question like "what do you already know about animal groups?" Then let them work through it independently, using a partner or small group only if they want to talk through their thinking, keeping a word bank or anchor chart in view so the vocabulary stays available. When you review, ask students how they knew, and let them point to the part of the diagram or reading that told them. These animal groups worksheets work well as a lead in before an investigation, as a way to capture what students noticed afterward, or as review before an assessment.
What students will practice
- Identify and name the type of group formed by specific animals
- Explain at least two survival benefits that animals gain from living in groups
- Compare a social animal species to a solitary species and explain the difference

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade ecosystems, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation.
