Pond Food Chain, Read and Draw Arrows

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Pond Food Chain, Read and Draw Arrows" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on ecosystems, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and food chains never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

3rd grade science worksheet: read about Pine Pond, draw arrows from algae to heron and answer 4 questions. Answer key included. Part of our food chains ecosystems collection. Aligned to NGSS standards.

How do I use this worksheet?

Start with something students can look at or think about: a photo, a short video, a jar on the windowsill, or a question like "what do you already know about food chains?" Then let them work through it independently, using a partner or small group only if they want to talk through their thinking, keeping a word bank or anchor chart in view so the vocabulary stays available. When you review, ask students how they knew, and let them point to the part of the diagram or reading that told them. These food chains worksheets work well as a lead in before an investigation, as a way to capture what students noticed afterward, or as review before an assessment.

What students will practice

  • Students will observe and describe food chains using accurate science vocabulary.
  • Students will gather evidence about food chains from diagrams, readings, and their own investigations.
  • Students will use what they learn about food chains to explain what they see and answer questions about the world around them.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read about Pine Pond, draw arrows from algae to heron and answer 4 questions. A food chain shows what eats what. A producer makes its own food, and a consumer eats other living things. The directions on the page read: Read about the living things in Pine Pond. Then, turn the page to draw the food chain and answer the questions. On page 2: Use the story on page 1. Draw an arrow from each living thing to the one that eats it. Then, answer the questions. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this food chains worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade ecosystems, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with food chains. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How many 3rd Grade food chains worksheets are there?

⌄
