What are time words and why do they help?

Time words such as first, next, then and last show the order of events. They help a young writer decide what comes first and give the reader a clear path through the story.

How long should a 1st grade story be?

Three to five sentences with a clear beginning, middle and end is a strong first grade story. A single detail about what the writer saw, heard or felt makes it stronger than extra length.

Practice oral storytelling before writing, since children often have more to say than they can write.
