Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

A describing poem uses short lines and describing words to tell how one thing looks, feels, sounds or smells. These 10 poem writing worksheets for 1st grade include nine poem pages that each start with a short model by a made-up student, such as Lemon or Feather, then ask children to write three describing words for a puppy, a seashell, a snowflake, a fire truck or a pumpkin. Children write the topic word on the first and last rows and finish It looks, It feels and It sounds or It smells to build a five line poem. The tenth sheet has children circle the 5 describing words in a poem about a kite and write 2 describing words for a rubber boot, with an answer key. Describing words are adjectives (CCSS L.1.1.F).

Frequently Asked Questions

Pick one thing, like a puppy, and list three describing words, such as soft, small and loud. Write the name on the first line, one line each for how it looks, feels and sounds or smells, and the name again on the last line. Each sheet prints these lines, so the poem is ready to fill in.
