Write a Color Poem About Green
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Write a Color Poem About Green" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core L.2.5.A. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and poem writing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

2nd grade writing worksheet: read a made-up color poem about yellow, then list 4 green things and finish each line of a poem about green. Part of our poem writing collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Read the model poem aloud and let your child act out each sense. Look at or taste the real thing if you can, like a bowl of popcorn, and list words before writing. Read the finished poem aloud with expression.
What students will practice
- Students will write sensory details that tell what they see, hear, smell, taste or feel.
- Students will finish a six line frame poem that ends by naming its topic.
- Students will sort describing words from a poem by the sense they name.

FAQ
How do I use this poem writing worksheet?
⌄
Read the model poem aloud and let your child act out each sense. Look at or taste the real thing if you can, like a bowl of popcorn, and list words before writing. Read the finished poem aloud with expression.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read a made-up color poem about yellow, then list 4 green things and finish each line of a poem about green. A sensory detail tells what you see, hear, smell, taste or feel. The directions on the page read: Read the Model and the topic. Then, write 4 green things in the Words box. Then, finish each line of your poem with a sensory detail. Then, end the last line by telling what green is.
Can I use this poem writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with poem writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a five senses poem?
⌄
Each line starts with a sense, I see, I hear, I smell, I taste and I feel, and the last line names the topic. The fall and spring sheets use this frame after a model about the beach or a snowy morning.
What is a color poem?
⌄
Each line tells what a color looks, sounds, tastes and feels like and how it makes you feel, as in Red sounds like a loud drum. The blue and green sheets use this frame after a model about red or yellow.
Does a 2nd grade poem have to rhyme?
⌄
No. These frame poems do not rhyme. The goal is choosing exact describing words, like crunchy, squishy or icy, so a reader can picture the topic.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
Only Sort the Sense Words From a Poem has one. The nine poem frames have no key, since each child chooses their own words.
