Write a Describing Poem About a Snowflake

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Write a Describing Poem About a Snowflake" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7), and it covers Common Core L.1.1.F. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and poem writing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this poem writing worksheet?

⌄

Put the real thing, or a picture of it, in front of your child and ask how it looks, feels and sounds or smells. Write those words on the three lines first, then use them to finish the It rows, and read the finished poem aloud.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read a made-up poem about a raindrop, then write 3 describing words and a poem about a snowflake with It falls. A poem has short lines. A describing word tells how a thing looks, feels, sounds or smells. The directions on the page read: Read the Model and topic. Then, write 3 describing words by the topic. Then, write snowflake on the first and last rows and finish the It rows.

Can I use this poem writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with poem writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How do you write a describing poem in 1st grade?

⌄

Pick one thing, like a puppy, and list three describing words, such as soft, small and loud. Write the name on the first line, one line each for how it looks, feels and sounds or smells, and the name again on the last line. Each sheet prints these lines, so the poem is ready to fill in.

What is a describing word?

⌄

A describing word, or adjective, tells more about a noun: a red kite, a soft feather, a loud fire truck. Using frequently occurring adjectives is part of L.1.1.F. The model poems show one describing word on each line.

Does a 1st grade poem have to rhyme?

⌄

No. These poems do not rhyme. They use short lines and a pattern instead, so a young writer can focus on choosing a good describing word for each sense.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

Only Circle the Describing Words in a Poem has one, listing big, red, long, soft and blue and sample words for the rubber boot. The nine poem pages are open writing, since each child chooses their own words.
