Phrases like 'of the students' or 'near the rivers' can mislead writers into making the verb agree with the nearest noun rather than the true subject of the sentence.
What is the strategy for finding the true subject when a phrase intervenes?⌄
Students are taught to mentally cross out or bracket the prepositional phrase ('The bag [of apples] is heavy') and then check the verb against what remains — the true subject.
