Build a Halloween Sentence for English Learners

Build a Halloween sentence for English learners, K to 2nd grade: a picture word bank and 6 sentence frames like I see a bat, with lines to write. Part of our sentence writing ell resources collection.

How do I use this resource?

Read each frame aloud with the picture, let the student choose a word from the bank, then read the finished sentence back before writing it. The frames repeat on purpose, so the sentence pattern sticks. Pair a newcomer with a buddy to read the sentences to each other.

What students will practice

  • Gives Kindergarten ELL students print-and-go practice with vocabulary, sentence openers, and beginning sounds.
  • Builds foundational English language skills through short, focused pages instead of one long lesson.
  • Supports small-group instruction, a language center, or extra practice time built into the day.

What does this resource teach?

⌄

A picture word bank of eight Halloween words at the top, then six sentence frames with a picture cue: I see a ____. The ____ is orange. I can see the ____. The ____ is black. The ____ can fly. Look at the ____. Each frame has lines to write the whole sentence.

Can I use this sentence writing resource for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for Kindergarten to 2nd Grade ell resources, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with sentence writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How many Kindergarten to 2nd Grade sentence writing resources are there?

⌄

1 printable resource, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

What age are sentence writing resources for?

⌄

These are written for Kindergarten to 2nd Grade students, roughly ages 5-8. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
