Frequently Asked Questions
Fifth graders should use commas correctly in complex sentences, appositives, and series (CCSS L.5.2a). They should also use italics or underlines for titles (L.5.2d), use a comma before a coordinating conjunction in a compound sentence, and correctly punctuate dialogue. Mastery of these rules is assessed on most state writing tests.
