Direct address (vocative) occurs when a speaker names the person being spoken to — for example, 'Maria, can you help me?' — and commas are required around the name to separate it from the rest of the sentence.
How does comma placement change when the name is in the middle of a sentence?⌄
When a name appears mid-sentence, commas go on both sides: 'Can you, Maria, help me with this?' — students practice all three positions (beginning, middle, and end) in these worksheets.
