FAQ
What types of introductory elements require a comma in 5th grade?⌄
All three types — introductory words (However,), phrases (After the long hike,), and clauses (When the bell rang,) — require a comma before the main clause begins.
How do students recognize where an introductory element ends?⌄
Students read until they reach the main subject of the sentence — everything before that subject that serves as setup is the introductory element, and a comma belongs right before the subject.
Are introductory comma rules part of 5th grade ELA standards?⌄
Yes — CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.5.2b specifically addresses using commas to set off introductory elements, making this one of the explicitly required punctuation skills for Grade 5.
