Frequently Asked Questions

First graders should spell CVC words correctly (cat, dog, run), use common spelling patterns (CVCe for long vowels: make, bike, home), and apply phonics knowledge to spell unfamiliar words (CCSS L.1.2d, L.1.2e). They should also spell high-frequency sight words correctly (the, was, said, they). By year's end, most first graders can spell 50 to 100 words conventionally and use invented spelling that is increasingly phonetically accurate for unknown words. Worksheets that target specific spelling patterns (short a words, long vowel words, digraph words) provide focused practice. Spelling instruction should connect to phonics and reading, not exist in isolation. Words children learn to spell should appear in the texts they are reading, creating a reinforcing cycle between decoding and encoding.
