Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

A double consonant is one consonant written two times, like the ll in bell. Short words with one short vowel often end in ff, ll, ss or zz, as in puff, bell, mess and buzz. These double consonants worksheets for 1st grade hold 8 sheets, each with an answer key (CCSS L.1.2.D). Children trace, copy, fold and cover to spell lists of ff, ll, ss and zz words like sniff, shell, glass and fizz, circle ll or ss to finish eight picture words, pick the ending in eight sentences and sort 12 words by their double ending. A short story about Jill and her doll Bess asks them to find words like hill, yell and dress.
