Ff, Ll, Ss or Zz in Sentences
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Ff, Ll, Ss or Zz in Sentences" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7), and it covers Common Core L.1.2.D. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on spelling, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and double consonants never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Circle ff, ll, ss or zz to finish a word in eight sentences, like buzz, cross and glass. A double consonant is one consonant written two times, like the ll in well. Short words with one vowel often end in ff, ll, ss or zz. The directions on the page read: Read each sentence. Circle the ending that finishes the word. Then, write the whole word on the line. An answer key is included.
Can I use this double consonants worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade spelling, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with double consonants. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a double consonant?
⌄
It is the same consonant written two times in a row, like ff in puff or ss in dress. In 1st grade, children learn that short words with one vowel often end in ff, ll, ss or zz.
Which words do these sheets practice?
⌄
The four lists hold ff words like off, huff and cliff, ll words like hill, doll and smell, ss words like boss, moss and class, and the zz words buzz, fizz, fuzz and jazz. Other pages mix all four endings in sentences, a word sort and a short story.
How does the fold, cover and spell column work?
⌄
Your child traces and copies each word, then folds the page on the dashed line so the words are hidden and spells each one again. Unfold the page to check.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All 8 double consonants sheets have an answer key.
