Shape tracing

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Shape tracing - Heart" is written for Preschool (Ages 3-5). Children who are new to this can work with a grown-up beside them, and the instructions are meant to be read aloud. Older children who need more practice with shape tracing can use it as a short review.

Trace the heart - Handwriting warm-up: Trace each dashed shape. The first one is done for you. Shapes use the same strokes letters do, so tracing them warms up the hand. Part of our shape tracing handwriting collection.

How do I use this worksheet?

Point to the finished example and trace it in the air together first. Ask the child to slow down at the corners of squares and triangles so the lines meet neatly.

What students will practice

  • Students will trace dashed circles, squares, triangles, rectangles and other shapes.
  • Students will practice the curves, corners and straight sides that letters also use.
  • Students will color in each shape after tracing it.

FAQ

How do I use this shape tracing worksheet?

⌄

Point to the finished example and trace it in the air together first. Ask the child to slow down at the corners of squares and triangles so the lines meet neatly.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

One shape fills each page in several dashed copies, and the first one is already traced as an example. Children trace the rest, then color them in. It works as a short warm-up before letter practice.

Can I use this shape tracing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for Preschool handwriting, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with shape tracing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How many Preschool shape tracing worksheets are there?

⌄

10 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

What age are shape tracing worksheets for?

⌄

These are written for preschool children, roughly ages 3-5. Start with the first few pages, use the free preview to judge the fit, and come back to harder ones as your child gets steadier.

Does my child need to write letters already?

⌄

No. Pages start with tracing over dashed guides and build up to writing on their own, one small step at a time.
