Preschool Sentence Writing Worksheets

Ages 3-5 · 22 worksheets · 12 answer keys · Print-ready PDFs

A sentence is a complete thought, and for a preschooler, writing one often means tracing or copying a few words that say something about their own life. At ages 3–5, the goal is not perfect spelling. It is understanding that ideas can be written down and read back, and that a sentence has words in a set order.

The 22 pages here pair drawing with words. On the draw and write pages, children draw a picture about their family, a favorite toy, a pet or their best day, then write or trace a sentence about it. On the sentence starter pages, they trace a starter such as I like, I see, I can or I have, finish it in their own words and draw it. A grown-up can write the child's words lightly for them to trace over. Answer keys come with 12 of the pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many children begin writing simple sentences in kindergarten, often with invented spelling. In preschool, it is common for children to dictate a sentence to a grown-up, trace it, or copy a short one such as "I like cats." Some 5-year-olds write short sentences on their own, but tracing and finishing sentence starters is typical at this age.
