Preschool Labeling Worksheets

Ages 3-5 · 12 worksheets · 12 answer keys · Print-ready PDFs

Labeling is writing a word next to a picture to name it, and it is one of the first real writing tasks young children can do on their own. It connects what a child can say, see and write, and it is often how preschoolers begin to understand that every object has a written name. Many classrooms label everyday things such as the door or the sink for the same reason.

These 12 pages give the skill a clear structure. Children say each picture name out loud and then write the word on the line beside it, using the word bank on the page for support. The word bank means a child does not need to spell from memory, only to match the spoken word to the right written one and copy it carefully. Answer keys show the correct label for every picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Labeling is short and concrete, so it is a manageable first writing task. The child knows exactly what to write, because the picture shows it, and only needs one word. It practices matching spoken words to written ones, copying letters correctly and building vocabulary, all without the pressure of writing a full sentence.
