Small Group Intervention Materials for Elementary Classrooms

Small-group sessions, whether pull-out, push-in, or a rotation within the regular classroom, run on a tight clock and depend heavily on having the right material already on hand. This is about the practical side of that: what makes a worksheet actually work well in a small-group setting, and how to keep a supply ready without rebuilding it every cycle.
What Makes a Worksheet Work Well in a Small-Group Setting (Short, Targeted, Low Prep)
Not every worksheet translates well to small-group use. The ones that work best tend to share a few traits:
- Short. A group session might only be ten to fifteen minutes. Material that takes that long to explain leaves no time for actual practice.
- Targeted to one specific skill. Small groups are usually formed around a specific, narrow need. Mixed-review material dilutes that focus.
- Low prep. Print-and-go beats anything requiring the interventionist to assemble materials or set up manipulatives beforehand, given how many groups a single person may run in a day.
Material that hits all three lets an interventionist move from group to group without losing session time to setup.
Organizing Materials by Skill So Groups Can Be Regrouped Quickly
Small groups aren't static. Students move between groups as skills develop or new needs emerge, sometimes week to week. Materials organized by skill, not just grade level, make regrouping far less disruptive, since new material for a newly formed group is a quick search away rather than a from-scratch build.

A standards-tagged library supports this directly: search by the specific skill a new group is working on, across grade levels if needed, rather than being limited to a single grade folder that may not match where the group actually is.
A Sample Small-Group Rotation Using Printable Practice
Here's a simple structure many interventionists use for a 20-minute small-group block:
- 0-3 min: Quick skill review or warm-up, tied to the group's specific focus
- 3-15 min: Targeted practice using a short, standards-matched worksheet, with the interventionist observing and supporting directly
- 15-18 min: A brief check, does the group need more practice at this level, or are they ready to move up?
- 18-20 min: Quick wrap-up and a note on what to pull for next session
Having several standards-matched worksheets ready at the group's level, rather than one, means the interventionist isn't stuck reusing identical material across a full week of sessions with the same group.
Where to Source Materials Without Rebuilding Them Every Cycle
The most time-consuming part of small-group intervention is often not the sessions themselves, it's sourcing fresh, targeted material every cycle. A shared, standards-tagged library reduces that load considerably: the same K-5 catalog across Math, Reading, and Grammar & Writing is available to every interventionist in the building, so material found once for one group is easy to reuse or adapt for a similar group later, rather than each person rebuilding materials independently.
To be clear about scope, this is practice material for groups your school has already formed and planned, based on your own screening, grouping, and intervention decisions. It doesn't determine how groups should be formed or how intervention should be structured, that remains your team's process. What it changes is how quickly you can put appropriate material in front of a group once that decision's been made.
