The letter X

X usually makes the /ks/ sound at the end of words, as in box, fox and six, while the few words that start with X, like x-ray and xylophone, say the letter's name or a /z/ sound instead.

Words that start with X

Frequently Asked Questions

Very few everyday words start with X, so the pictures here are an x-ray and a xylophone. Writing is the easy part: both X and x are two crossing slanted lines. Preschoolers trace and write each one, circle every X and x in a letter box, try the beginning sounds page, and finish "X is for x-ray." The x-ray returns on the kindergarten letter recognition page, beside a tracing page, and 1st graders get an X word search. The sound needs a little explaining, since X usually shows up at the end of words like box and fox. Mixed-letter pages and a cursive X (for later on) add more practice. Answer keys are included for several pages.
