The letter S

S usually makes the /s/ sound, as in sun and sock, a long hiss like air leaking from a tire. At the end of some words, like is and dogs, it sounds more like /z/.

Words that start with S

  • sun
  • sock
  • star
  • snake
  • six
  • seal

How to write S and s

Uppercase S:
Start near the top right, curve up and over to the left, then swing back to the right through the middle and curve down and around to finish at the bottom left. It is one smooth stroke without lifting the pencil.
Lowercase s:
Make the same shape, only smaller: start just below the midline on the right, curve to the left, cross back through the middle, and finish with a curve along the baseline.

Frequently Asked Questions

S is a hissing sound and a curvy shape, and both take a bit of practice. Children start by tracing a big uppercase S and a smaller lowercase s, following the arrows so each curve begins at the top. Next come a letter box hunt, a beginning sounds page with a sun and a sock, and an "S is for sun" sheet. Kindergarteners trace S again and spot it on a salad letter recognition page, and 1st graders look for S words in a word search. If the curve comes out backwards at first, that's normal. Mixed-letter practice and a cursive S (for later on) are here too. Several pages include answer keys.
