How to write Y and y

Uppercase Y:
Slant down from the top left to the middle, then slant down from the top right to meet it. Pull a straight line from that point down to the baseline.
Lowercase y:
Make a short slant from the midline down to the right, ending at the baseline. Then start at the midline to the right and make a longer slant down to the left, past the baseline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lowercase y is one of the letters with a tail below the line, so the tracing arrows matter here more than usual. Your child traces and writes uppercase Y and lowercase y, circles every Y and y in a letter box, and listens for /y/ in pictures of yarn, a yo-yo and a yak. The "Y is for yarn" sheet pulls it together: name the pictures, circle the letter, trace Yy. Kindergarten includes a Y tracing page and a yoga letter recognition page. First grade adds a word search. For more review, the practice row has matching and missing-letter pages, and older siblings can move on to cursive Y. Answer keys are included for several pages.
