Plan on the page before a real essay. Use the revising and editing pages on a finished draft. Check each fix against the answer key and ask your child to explain the rule.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
5th grade writing page: plan a five-paragraph essay. A five-paragraph essay has an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Its thesis is one sentence that states the main point. The directions on the page read: Read the topic. Then, write one main idea in each box and evidence for each body idea. Then, read your boxes from top to bottom. The answer key gives a marking guide and a model answer, since answers will vary.
Can I use this writing process worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade writing topics, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with writing process. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is the writing process in 5th grade?
⌄
Fifth graders plan, revise, edit and rewrite their writing (CCSS W.5.5). These three sheets practice planning, revising and editing.
What is voice in writing?
⌄
Voice is how a writer's personality shows in the words. Adding a simile, a sensory detail or a clear attitude gives a flat draft more voice. The voice sheet gives a checklist of boosters.
How do I plan a five-paragraph essay?
⌄
Use one box for the introduction and thesis, three for body paragraphs with a main idea and evidence each, and one for the conclusion. The planning sheet asks for the main idea and evidence in each box and reading them from top to bottom.
Do these worksheets have answer keys?
⌄
Yes. All three sheets include a key with a marking guide and corrected examples.
What writing skills do 5th graders need?
⌄
Fifth graders write opinion pieces with logically ordered reasons (CCSS W.5.1), informative texts with facts and quotations (W.5.2) and narratives with dialogue, description and pacing (W.5.3). They also plan, revise and edit (W.5.5), gather information and summarize it (W.5.8) and cite text evidence (RI.5.1).
How do I teach a thesis statement?
⌄
A thesis statement names the topic and makes a point in one sentence. Compare a weak version, "I like lunch," with a strong one that gives a reason, then have your child write one for each new topic and check it against a three-point checklist.
How do I help my child use evidence from a text?
⌄
Have your child answer the question first, then point to the sentence in the passage that proves the answer. A strong response names the evidence and explains how it supports the answer.
Do the 5th grade writing worksheets have answer keys?
⌄
Yes. All 15 new sheets include an answer key with a marking guide and a model response.
