Constellations Through the Year
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Constellations Through the Year" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers NGSS 5-ESS1-2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on Earth and space, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and stars and the sun never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

5th grade science worksheet: read a table of constellations to see which star patterns each season shows. Answer key included. Part of our stars and the sun earth and space collection. Aligned to NGSS standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Start with something students can look at or think about: a photo, a short video, a jar on the windowsill, or a question like "what do you already know about stars and the sun?" Then let them work through it independently and self-check their own work against an answer key before you review it as a class, keeping a word bank or anchor chart in view so the vocabulary stays available. When you review, ask students how they knew, and let them point to the part of the diagram or reading that told them. These stars and the sun worksheets work well as a lead in before an investigation, as a way to capture what students noticed afterward, or as review before an assessment.
What students will practice
- Students will observe and describe stars and the sun using accurate science vocabulary.
- Students will gather evidence about stars and the sun from readings, data, and their own investigations.
- Students will use what they learn about stars and the sun to explain what they see and answer questions about the world around them.

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read a table of constellations to see which star patterns each season shows. A constellation is a group of stars that forms a pattern in the night sky. As Earth orbits (travels around) the sun, our night side faces different parts of space, so the seasons show different stars. The directions on the page read: Read the table of star patterns. Then, answer questions 1 to 6. The answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this stars and the sun worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade Earth and space, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with stars and the sun. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
