Gases Have Weight
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Gases Have Weight" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers NGSS 5-PS1-1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on matter, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and matter investigations never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

5th grade science worksheet: find the mass of the air in pumped balls and explain why gases have weight. Answer key included. Part of our matter investigations collection. Aligned to NGSS standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Try a safe version of one test at home, like dissolving salt and sand in water or fizzing baking soda and vinegar, before your child does the matching page. Ask what evidence each answer is based on. Check each page with the answer key.

FAQ
How do I use this matter investigations worksheet?
⌄
Try a safe version of one test at home, like dissolving salt and sand in water or fizzing baking soda and vinegar, before your child does the matching page. Ask what evidence each answer is based on. Check each page with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Find the mass of the air in pumped balls and explain why gases have weight. Air is a gas, a kind of matter made of particles (bits too small to see). Gas particles have mass (an amount of matter), so air has weight even though you cannot see it. The directions on the page read: Read about the tests. Fill in rows 1 to 3. Then, answer 4 to 7. The answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this matter investigations worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade matter, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with matter investigations. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How do scientists identify a mystery material?
⌄
They test its properties, such as whether a magnet pulls it, whether it conducts electricity, dissolves or floats, and then match the results to the properties of known materials.
How can you show that air has weight?
⌄
Balance two empty balloons, then fill one with air: that side tips down. Weighing a ball flat and again after pumping it up also shows the mass the air added.
What are the signs of a chemical change?
⌄
Gas bubbles, a new color, a new smell, light or warmth given off, or a solid forming in a liquid. A physical change, like melting or dissolving sugar, changes shape, size or state but not the substance.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All five matter sheets have an answer key that shows every answer, including sample answers for the questions children explain in their own words.
How many 5th Grade matter investigations worksheets are there?
⌄
5 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
What age are matter investigations worksheets for?
⌄
These are written for 5th Grade students, roughly ages 10-11. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
Are these matter investigations worksheets aligned to NGSS?
⌄
Yes. Each one shows the NGSS code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
