Heat Moves From Warm to Cool
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Heat Moves From Warm to Cool" is written for 4th Grade (Ages 9-10), and it covers NGSS 4-PS3-2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and energy transfer never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

4th grade science worksheet: circle which way heat moves, from warm to cool, in everyday examples. Answer key included. Part of our energy transfer collection. Aligned to NGSS standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Point to real examples at home: a warm mug, a ball you kick, a lamp you switch on. Ask where the energy came from and where it went before your child writes. Check each page with the answer key.
What students will practice
- Students will trace energy from the sun through a food chain.
- Students will explain that heat moves from warmer objects to cooler ones.
- Students will describe energy moving in collisions and changing from one form to another.

FAQ
How do I use this energy transfer worksheet?
⌄
Point to real examples at home: a warm mug, a ball you kick, a lamp you switch on. Ask where the energy came from and where it went before your child writes. Check each page with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Circle which way heat moves, from warm to cool, in everyday examples. Heat is energy that always moves from a warmer object to a cooler one. Temperature tells how hot or cold something is. The directions on the page read: Read each sentence. Then, circle the way heat moves, study the table and answer the questions. The answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this energy transfer worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 4th Grade energy transfer, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is energy transfer?
⌄
Energy transfer is energy moving from one place or object to another. A bowling ball passes energy to the pins, and a hot mug passes heat to the cooler air around it.
Which way does heat move?
⌄
Heat always moves from the warmer object to the cooler one. A spoon in hot soup warms up, and a snowball in a warm mitten melts, because heat flows out of the warmer thing.
What is the difference between stored energy and motion energy?
⌄
Stored energy is energy waiting to be used, like the energy in food, a battery, a stretched rubber band or a sled at the top of a hill. Motion energy is the energy of something moving. When the sled slides down, stored energy becomes motion energy.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All five energy transfer sheets have an answer key that shows every answer, including sample answers for the questions children explain in their own words.
