Mass and Volume
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Mass and Volume" is written for 4th Grade (Ages 9-10), and it covers NGSS 5-PS1-3. That standard sits in the 5th grade band, so treat this worksheet as an early introduction rather than standards practice for this grade. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on matter, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and properties of matter never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

4th grade science worksheet: compare mass on balances and order objects from least to most mass. Answer key included. Part of our properties of matter collection. Aligned to NGSS standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Gather a few of the objects from the pages, such as a sponge, a penny, a paper clip and a rubber band, and test them together before your child writes. Ask which property each test shows. Check each page with the answer key.
What students will practice
- Students will describe and sort objects by observable properties.
- Students will compare the mass of objects and explain the difference between mass and volume.
- Students will tell physical changes from changes that make a new material.

FAQ
How do I use this properties of matter worksheet?
⌄
Gather a few of the objects from the pages, such as a sponge, a penny, a paper clip and a rubber band, and test them together before your child writes. Ask which property each test shows. Check each page with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Compare mass on balances and order objects from least to most mass. Mass is the amount of matter in an object. The lower side of a balance holds more mass. Volume is the space something takes up. The directions on the page read: Circle the object with more mass on each balance, or circle Same if it is level. Then, answer the questions. The answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this properties of matter worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 4th Grade matter, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with properties of matter. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a property of matter?
⌄
A property is something you can observe or measure about a material, like whether it is hard or soft, floats or sinks, bends or stays rigid, or is pulled by a magnet.
What is the difference between mass and volume?
⌄
Mass is the amount of matter in an object, measured on a balance or scale. Volume is the space it takes up. A big beach ball can have less mass than a small rock.
What is a physical change?
⌄
In a physical change, matter changes size, shape or state but stays the same material, like ice melting or paper being cut. If a new material forms, like rust on a bike chain, it is not a physical change.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All five properties of matter sheets have an answer key that shows every answer, including sample answers for the questions children explain in their own words.
How many 4th Grade properties of matter worksheets are there?
⌄
5 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
What age are properties of matter worksheets for?
⌄
These are written for 4th Grade students, roughly ages 9-10. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
Are these properties of matter worksheets aligned to NGSS?
⌄
Yes. Each one shows the NGSS code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
