Ways to Slow Erosion

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Ways to Slow Erosion" is written for 4th Grade (Ages 9-10), and it covers NGSS 4-ESS3-2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and weathering and erosion never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this weathering and erosion worksheet?

⌄

Before the first page, ask your child to explain the difference in their own words: weathering breaks, erosion moves. On a walk, look for cracked sidewalks, washed out soil or sand piles. Check each page with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read a soil tray test and choose ways to slow erosion. Erosion carries soil and rock away. Plant roots grip the soil and hold it in place. People also use rocks, walls and fences. The directions on the page read: Study the table and answer the questions. Then, write the letter of the best way to slow each kind of erosion. The answer key shows every answer.

Can I use this weathering and erosion worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 4th Grade weathering and erosion, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is the difference between weathering and erosion?

⌄

Weathering breaks rock into smaller pieces, like ice splitting a rock or roots cracking it, and the pieces stay in place. Erosion moves those pieces somewhere else, carried by water, wind or ice.

What is deposition?

⌄

Deposition is when water, wind or ice drops the sediment it was carrying in a new place. When a river slows at the ocean, its sediment piles up and builds new land called a delta.

How can people slow erosion?

⌄

Plant roots grip the soil and hold it in place, so planting grass and trees is one of the best ways. People also use rocks, walls and fences. One sheet uses a soil tray test to compare bare soil with soil covered by leaves, rocks or grass.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All five weathering and erosion sheets have an answer key that shows every answer, including sample answers for the questions children explain in their own words.
