Put Animal Words in ABC Order

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Put Animal Words in ABC Order" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7), and it covers Common Core L.1.2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on alphabetizing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and ABC order never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this ABC order worksheet?

⌄

Sing or say the alphabet with your child while pointing to the strip at the top. Have your child find each first letter on the strip before numbering. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Write two sets of animal names, like whale, cat and bee, in ABC order. ABC order means putting words in the same order as the letters of the alphabet. The directions on the page read: Read the animal names in each box. Then, write the words in ABC order on the lines. The answer key shows every answer.

Can I use this ABC order worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade alphabetizing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with ABC order. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is ABC order?

⌄

ABC order means putting words in the same order as the letters of the alphabet. Ant comes before boat because a comes before b.

What if two words start with the same letter?

⌄

Look at the second letter. Bat and bed both start with b, and a comes before e, so bat comes first.

How is the ABC order set different from the other alphabetizing worksheets?

⌄

These six pages are a step by step set with an alphabet strip on each page, moving from first letters to letters before and after and then to second letters. The other alphabetizing pages practice themed word lists, like animal and food words.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All six alphabetical order pages have an answer key.

Why do first graders need to learn alphabetical order?

⌄

Alphabetizing is a practical reference skill, not just an abstract exercise. It is how students will look up a word in a dictionary or glossary, find a book by author on a library shelf, or navigate any alphabetized list later in school and life. Starting with simple first-letter alphabetizing in first grade builds the foundation for multi-letter alphabetizing (comparing the second or third letter when words start the same) in later grades.

What is the difference between circling words in order and writing a list in order?

⌄

Circling words that are already in the correct alphabetical sequence is a recognition task: students check whether an order is already correct. Writing a list of scrambled words in the correct alphabetical order is a production task: students have to actually sort the words themselves, which is the harder and more useful version of the skill. First grade worksheets typically start with the circling version and move students toward writing their own ordered lists.

How can I practice alphabetizing with my first grader outside of a worksheet?

⌄

Grab a small stack of books, toys, or flashcards with names or words on them and ask your child to line them up alphabetically. Grocery lists work well too: write down a few items and ask your child to help you put them in ABC order before you go shopping. Anything with a name attached can become quick alphabetizing practice.
