Plan Writing with a Main Idea Web

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Plan Writing with a Main Idea Web" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core W.3.5. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing topics, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and writing process never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this writing process worksheet?

⌄

Do the planning page before a real writing task, and the revising and editing pages after a draft. Read the example together and check each correction against the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

3rd grade writing page: plan writing with a main idea web. The main idea is the big point of your writing. A web puts it in the middle and details around it. The directions on the page read: Read the topic. Then, fill in the web. Then, use it to write five or more sentences. The answer key gives a marking guide and a model answer, since answers will vary.

Can I use this writing process worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade writing topics, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with writing process. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is the writing process in 3rd grade?

⌄

Third graders plan, draft, revise and edit with some guidance and support from peers and adults (CCSS W.3.5). These three sheets cover planning, revising and editing.

What does revising for details mean?

⌄

Revising means changing a draft to make it better. Adding details, such as what kind, what color or where, tells the reader more. The revising sheet gives plain sentences and asks students to rewrite each one with details.

What should 3rd graders check when editing?

⌄

Capital letters for names and titles, commas in lists, dates and addresses, quotation marks for speech and apostrophes in possessives (L.3.2). The editing sheet gives six sentences with these mistakes.

Do these worksheets have answer keys?

⌄

Yes. All three sheets include a key with a marking guide and corrected sentences.

What writing skills do 3rd graders need?

⌄

Third graders write opinion pieces with linked reasons (CCSS W.3.1), informative texts that group facts (W.3.2) and narratives with dialogue and description (W.3.3). They also plan, revise and edit their work (W.3.5) and use capitals, commas and quotation marks correctly (L.3.2).

How do I help my child write a strong opening and ending?

⌄

Teach a hook for the first sentence, like a question to the reader, and a conclusion that restates the main idea in new words. The hook and conclusion sheets give an example and a checklist.

Do the 3rd grade writing worksheets have answer keys?

⌄

Yes. All 15 new sheets include an answer key with a marking guide and a model response.
