Homographs That Change Sound

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Homographs That Change Sound" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers Common Core L.5.5.C. If your little one is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and homophones and homographs never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this homophones and homographs worksheet?

⌄

Have your child read each sentence aloud, especially on the homograph page, so they hear which sound fits. Keep a short list of the pairs they miss. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read homographs like wind, lead and tear in sentences and circle the word each rhymes with. Homographs are words spelled the same with different meanings. Some are also said differently, and the sentence shows which way. The directions on the page read: Read each sentence and think about how the bold word is said. Then, circle the word it rhymes with. The page opens with a worked example, and the answer key shows every answer.

Can I use this homophones and homographs worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade homophones and homographs, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

Which homophones do 5th graders still confuse?

⌄

Pairs like principal and principle, stationary and stationery, complement and compliment, and council and counsel. They also mix up near-homophones like accept and except or affect and effect, which the commonly confused words sheet covers.

What is a homograph that changes sound?

⌄

Some homographs are spelled the same but said differently, like wind (moving air) and wind (to turn), or tear (crying) and tear (to rip). The sentence tells you which one to say. The sheet checks this by asking which word each one rhymes with.

How can my child remember affect and effect?

⌄

Affect is usually the action (verb) and effect is usually the result (noun). A quick memory hook: A for action, E for end result. The word guide on the sheet gives each meaning.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All four homophones and homographs sheets have an answer key.
