How do you help a first grader learn to spell words?

Focus on phonetic patterns rather than rote memorization: once a child knows the short-a pattern, they can spell many CVC words. Introduce spelling patterns (word families like -at, -an, -ap) and sight words as separate categories. What is the difference between a letter and a word?

A letter is a single symbol representing a sound (b, a, t). A word is a meaningful unit made up of one or more letters (bat). This distinction is foundational for early literacy (CCSS L.K.1a and RF.K.1b) and usually established in kindergarten, but reinforced in first grade through phonics and reading work. Worksheets that ask students to circle words vs. single letters in a line reinforce this concept.
