What is phoneme segmentation and how is it different from phoneme isolation?⌄
Isolation identifies one sound in a word; segmentation breaks the entire word into all its individual phonemes in order — for example, 'cat' segments as /k/ /a/ /t/.
What strategies do 1st graders use to segment phonemes on worksheets?⌄
Students tap a finger for each sound, push a counter into a box on an Elkonin sound box grid, or draw lines to represent each phoneme as they say the word slowly.
How does phoneme segmentation directly improve spelling?⌄
When students can completely segment a word into sounds, they can then attempt to write a letter or letters for each phoneme — the foundation of phonetic spelling and invented writing.
