Roll a Word Family
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Roll a Word Family" is written for Kindergarten to 1st Grade (Ages 5-7). Children a grade either side can use it too: younger ones with an adult reading it aloud, older ones as a quick refresher.

Roll a word family for K-1: roll a die, add the beginning sound to -at and -ig, then read and trace the new words. 1 page game. Part of our dice and spinner games collection.
How do I use this resource?
Children roll a die, find that number in both word family boxes, then read and trace the two words. Ask them to use one of the words in a sentence.
What students will practice
- Turns sight word, phonics and math fact practice into a game children want to play again.
- Builds speaking and listening skills as players read aloud and check each other's answers.
- Works for partners, small groups, centers or the whole class with little setup.

How do I use the Roll a Word Family?
⌄
Children roll a die, find that number in both word family boxes, then read and trace the two words. Ask them to use one of the words in a sentence.
What is the Roll a Word Family?
⌄
A one-page word family game. Each number on the die matches a beginning sound in the -at box and the -ig box, so children build, read and trace words like bat, cat, big and dig.
Can I use the Roll a Word Family at home and in the classroom?
⌄
Yes. We made it for Kindergarten to 1st Grade learning games, and it works the same at home or at school. Families print it for one child and keep it where they will use it every day. Teachers print a copy per student or one for the whole room, whichever the day needs.
What learning games are there for kindergarten and 1st grade?
⌄
Sight word bingo, roll and read, race board games for adding and subtracting, I Have Who Has card games, roll and cover, spin and graph shapes, and roll a word family.
What do I need to play?
⌄
Most games need a die, crayons or counters. The race board games include game pieces to cut out, and the spin and graph game uses a paper clip and a pencil as the spinner.
How many children can play the kindergarten games?
⌄
Bingo and I Have Who Has work for the whole class. Board games are for 2 to 4 players, and roll and read can be played alone or with a partner.
How do kindergartners check their answers?
⌄
The race board games have an answer strip that a partner uses to check each answer, so children can play on their own in a center.
