The Writing Process Anchor Chart
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"The Writing Process Anchor Chart" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9). Children a grade either side can use it too: younger ones with an adult reading it aloud, older ones as a quick refresher.

How do I use this resource?
Post the writing process anchor chart during writing workshop so your 3rd grade students can check which stage they're in. Print the pencil control booklet as a stapled packet for early finishers, a fine motor warm-up, or a home practice set. Use the maze and the name tracing and coloring sheet as short, low-pressure activities during centers or transition time. At home, a page or two of tracing before writing homework helps loosen up the hand and build the control real writing requires.
What students will practice
- Gives 3rd grade students visual and hands-on support for handwriting, pencil control, and the writing process.
- Builds fine motor skills through tracing, mazes, and cutting activities, and process awareness through an anchor chart.
- Supports name recognition and early handwriting alongside the mechanics of writing itself.

What is The Writing Process Anchor Chart?
⌄
This writing collection gives 3rd grade teachers and parents a range of supports, from a reference anchor chart of the writing process steps (prewrite, draft, revise, edit, publish) for older students, to hands-on pencil control materials for younger ones. The pencil control booklet walks through straight lines, diagonals, and curves across a full set of tracing pages, while a separate maze and a name tracing and coloring sheet add more practice in a game-like format. A name writing activity sheet builds handwriting and name recognition together. Between the anchor chart and the tracing materials, the collection covers both the mechanics of holding a pencil and the bigger-picture process of writing.
Can I use The Writing Process Anchor Chart at home and in the classroom?
⌄
Yes. We made it for 3rd Grade writing, and it works the same at home or at school. Families print it for one child and keep it where they will use it every day. Teachers print a copy per student or one for the whole room, whichever the day needs.
How many 3rd Grade writing process resources are there?
⌄
1 printable resource, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
What age are writing process resources for?
⌄
These are written for 3rd Grade students, roughly ages 8-9. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
Can I use these writing process resources for homeschool?
⌄
Yes. Nothing here assumes a classroom of 25, so they work the same one-to-one at the kitchen table as they do in a 3rd Grade classroom, a learning center, or a tutoring session.
