How do I use this worksheet?
Say the sorting rule out loud before each page. Ask the child why an animal belongs in a group, since explaining the reason matters more than the answer.
What students will practice
- Students will sort animals by where they live: land, water or sky.
- Students will sort animals by how they look, such as legs, stripes, spots and tails.

FAQ
How do I use this sorting animals worksheet?
⌄
Say the sorting rule out loud before each page. Ask the child why an animal belongs in a group, since explaining the reason matters more than the answer.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
"Sort by legs" (two or four legs) is a cut and paste sort: the child cuts out six labeled pictures and pastes each one into the two legs box or the four legs box. The two legs pictures are the hen, ostrich and penguin, and the four legs pictures are the dog, elephant and zebra. It practices sorting animals by one rule at a time. An answer key is included.
Can I use this sorting animals worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for Preschool farm and ocean animals, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with sorting animals. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How many Preschool sorting animals worksheets are there?
⌄
14 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
What age are sorting animals worksheets for?
⌄
These are written for preschool children, roughly ages 3-5. Start with the first few pages, use the free preview to judge the fit, and come back to harder ones as your child gets steadier.
Does my child need to know how to write for these sorting animals worksheets?
⌄
No. Most pages ask children to circle, trace, match, color, or cut and paste, and a few ask for a single number. A grown-up can read the instructions aloud, so children do not need to read yet.
