Frequently Asked Questions

5th grade cursive should focus on fluency and application rather than learning new letterforms, since the full alphabet and basic joins are usually solid by this point. That means writing full sentences and short paragraphs at a steady pace, practicing a signature, and applying capitalization and punctuation rules (a comma in a compound sentence, a capital letter for a name or place) within cursive writing rather than as a separate grammar exercise. If a 5th grader still can't form several cursive letters correctly, it's worth stepping back to letter-level practice before pushing into paragraph writing, since paragraph fluency assumes the letters themselves are no longer the bottleneck.
