How do you teach the months of the year to first graders?

Songs and mnemonics (Thirty Days Hath September) are the most effective memory tools. Use a classroom calendar daily, pointing to the current month and having students identify what comes next. Worksheets that ask students to order the months, identify the month before or after, and count months between events build procedural fluency with the calendar.

When should first graders know all 12 months?

Most first graders can name the months in order by midyear with daily calendar practice. Remembering the number of days in each month takes longer and benefits from the rhyme or knuckle method taught explicitly. The ability to use a calendar to find a date or count days is a higher-level skill typically solidified by end of first grade.
