Word Family Rhyme Match

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Word Family Rhyme Match" is written for Kindergarten (Ages 5-6), and it covers Common Core RF.K.2.A. If your little one is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and word families never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this word families worksheet?

⌄

Say each picture name and stretch the ending so your child hears the family. Help with cutting on the wheels and flip books, then let your child read each new word aloud.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Draw lines to match rhyming pictures from the at, an, ig, og and un families. The directions on the page read: Say the name of each picture. Then, draw a line to the picture that rhymes with it, like bug and rug. The answer key shows every answer.

Can I use this word families worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for Kindergarten word families, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a word family?

⌄

A word family is a group of words that end the same way and rhyme, like cat, hat and bat in the at family. Kindergartners learn that changing the first letter makes a new word.

Which word families are on these pages?

⌄

The at, an, ig, og and un families, with words like cat, man, pig, dog and sun. Every word has a picture, so children can work from the picture and the sound.

How do I use the word family wheels and flip books?

⌄

Help your child cut out the pieces. A wheel turns so a new first letter shows next to the ending, and a flip book stacks letter cards on the ending. Each time a new word appears, your child reads it aloud and traces it.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

The eight practice pages have an answer key. The two word family wheels and two flip books are cut and build activities with no answer key.
