Frequently Asked Questions

1st grade cursive worksheets are deliberately pre-cursive: tracing the connected strokes and loops that every cursive letter is eventually built from, without any actual letters yet. This matters because cursive letters aren't just print letters with a different shape, they're built from continuous, connected pen strokes that a hand accustomed to picking the pencil up between every print letter hasn't practiced. Introducing the motor pattern (an over curve, an under curve, a tall loop, a low loop) before the letterform makes the actual letters, taught in later grades, noticeably easier to learn. Skipping this stage and going straight to cursive letters in 2nd or 3rd grade is possible, but it usually means re-teaching the connected-stroke motion at the same time as the letter shapes, which is slower than doing them in order.
