Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"At and An Short Read" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7). If your little one is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read the story Mia and the Cat, circle the at and an words and list them. A word family is a group of words that end with the same letters, like big, dig and wig. This page uses the at family and the an family. The directions on the page read: Read the story. Circle every word that ends in at or an. Then, write each word one time in its list. The answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this word families worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade word families, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What are word families in 1st grade?
⌄
A word family is a group of words that end with the same letters and rhyme, like cat, hat and bat. The ending is called a rime.
Which word families are on these pages?
⌄
Short a: at, an, ap. Short e: en, et, ed. Short i: ig, ip, id. Short o: og, ot, ock. Short u: ug, un, uck. The sort adds ake and ar. Newer pages use at, an, ig, og and un in sentences, a short read, word wheels and flip books.
How do word families help 1st graders read?
⌄
Once a child can read an ending like ug, they can read bug, hug and rug by changing only the first letter. That is faster than sounding out every letter.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All fifteen word family pages have an answer key.
