Prefixes Un, Re, Dis and Mis
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Prefixes Un, Re, Dis and Mis" is written for 4th Grade (Ages 9-10), and it covers Common Core L.4.2.D. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on spelling, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and prefixes and suffixes never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this prefixes and suffixes worksheet?
⌄
Have your child say each base word aloud and name the rule before writing. For two syllable words, clap the word to find the stressed part. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Add the prefix un, re, dis or mis to 12 base words, then finish sentences. A prefix is a word part added to the start of a base word. A prefix never changes the spelling of the base word. The directions on the page read: Read the rule box. Then, add the prefix to each base word and write the new word. On page 2: Read each sentence. Then, add the prefix to the base word in () and write the new word on the blank. The answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this prefixes and suffixes worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 4th Grade spelling, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with prefixes and suffixes. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
When do you use tion or sion?
⌄
Many base words that end in t take tion, like invent and invention. Many that end in d or de take sion, like decide and decision. Sion can also sound like zhun, as in division.
Do you double the consonant in two syllable words?
⌄
Only when the stress is on the last syllable: begin becomes beginning and admit becomes admitted. When the stress is on the first syllable, do not double: open becomes opening and visit becomes visited.
Does a prefix change the spelling of the base word?
⌄
No. A prefix goes on the front and the base word stays the same, so un plus happy is unhappy and mis plus spell is misspell, with two s letters.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All five sheets have an answer key that shows every spelling.
How many 4th Grade prefixes and suffixes worksheets are there?
⌄
5 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
What age are prefixes and suffixes worksheets for?
⌄
These are written for 4th Grade students, roughly ages 9-10. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
Are these prefixes and suffixes worksheets aligned to Common Core?
⌄
Yes. Each one shows the Common Core code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
