Ph and Ch Words From Greek

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Ph and Ch Words From Greek" is written for 4th Grade (Ages 9-10), and it covers Common Core L.4.2.D. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on spelling, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and spelling list practice never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

How do I use this worksheet?

Begin with a shared reading or oral warm-up that highlights spelling list practice so students hear and see the skill in context before practicing it independently. Have students work through it independently, since students at this age benefit more from productive struggle than from being walked through each step, especially for phonics-based tasks where saying an answer aloud first helps. After completing the worksheet, use one or two examples from the page to start a discussion: "Where else have you seen this in your reading?" These spelling list practice worksheets are ideal for use during small group reading time, as independent center work, or as a homework activity.

What students will practice

Read and write 12 Greek words with ph and ch like phone, dolphin and chorus. Some English words come from Greek. In them, ph spells the f sound (trophy) and ch can spell the k sound (orchestra). The directions on the page read: Read each word. Look at the bold letters. Then, write the word on the line. On page 2: Read the words in the word bank. Then, write the word that best finishes each sentence. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this spelling list practice worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 4th Grade spelling, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with spelling list practice. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How many 4th Grade spelling list practice worksheets are there?

⌄

3 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

What age are spelling list practice worksheets for?

These are written for 4th Grade students, roughly ages 9-10. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.

Are these spelling list practice worksheets aligned to Common Core?

⌄

Yes. Each one shows the Common Core code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
