Short Vowel Sort and Spell
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Short Vowel Sort and Spell" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core L.2.2.D. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on spelling, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and spelling sorts never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this spelling sorts worksheet?
⌄
Have your child read each word aloud before sorting. For the ed page, say the word and listen to the last sound. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Write 15 words from a bank under short a, e, i, o or u. A short vowel is the quick sound of a, e, i, o, or u. Say each word and listen for the vowel sound in the middle, like the a in cap. The directions on the page read: Read each word in the word bank. Say it and listen for the vowel sound. Then, write the word under the right short vowel. The answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this spelling sorts worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade spelling, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with spelling sorts. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a spelling sort?
⌄
A sort asks children to put words into groups by a shared pattern, like words that end in ng. Spotting the pattern helps them spell new words that follow it.
What are the three sounds of ed?
⌄
Ed can sound like t (kicked), d (played) or id (planted). The id sound comes after words that end in t or d. The spelling stays ed every time.
What is the difference between ng and nk?
⌄
Both come after a vowel at the end of a word. Ng sounds like the end of ring, and nk adds a k sound, as in sink.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All five sort sheets have an answer key.
How many 2nd Grade spelling sorts worksheets are there?
⌄
5 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
What age are spelling sorts worksheets for?
⌄
These are written for 2nd Grade students, roughly ages 7-8. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
Are these spelling sorts worksheets aligned to Common Core?
⌄
Yes. Each one shows the Common Core code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
