Rock and Soil Words Match
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Rock and Soil Words Match" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on Earth and water, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and landforms never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

2nd grade science worksheet: match eight earth words, such as canyon, cave, dune and lava, to their pictures. Answer key included. Part of our landforms earth and water collection. Aligned to NGSS standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Start with something students can look at or think about: a photo, a short video, a jar on the windowsill, or a question like "what do you already know about landforms?" Then let them work through it independently after a quick group example, checking in with a partner if they get stuck, keeping a word bank or anchor chart in view so the vocabulary stays available. When you review, ask students how they knew, and let them point to the part of the diagram or reading that told them. These landforms worksheets work well as a lead in before an investigation, as a way to capture what students noticed afterward, or as review before an assessment.
What students will practice
- Identify and describe at least six major landforms using precise vocabulary
- Match landform names to labeled images or diagrams
- Locate examples of common landforms on a simple physical map

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Match eight earth words, such as canyon, cave, dune and lava, to their pictures. Rocks and soil make up the land. Each land shape and each kind of rock or soil has its own name. The directions on the page read: Read the glossary. Then, write the word that matches each picture on its line. The answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this landforms worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade Earth and water, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with landforms. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What do landforms worksheets teach second graders?
⌄
Students learn the names, definitions, and visual characteristics of major landforms, and begin to understand that landforms were shaped by natural forces over long periods of time. For 7-8 year olds, picture matching, map activities, and simple model building make landform vocabulary stick.
When do second graders learn about landforms?
⌄
Landforms are typically introduced in Grade 2 as part of Earth science and often appear in social studies geography lessons as well. The cross-curricular nature of this topic makes it especially valuable for building transferable academic vocabulary.
