Layers of Soil, Write the Layers
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Layers of Soil, Write the Layers" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on Earth and water, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and soil never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

2nd grade science worksheet: write topsoil, subsoil, parent rock and bedrock on a soil cross section. Answer key included. Part of our soil earth and water collection. Aligned to NGSS standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Start with something students can look at or think about: a photo, a short video, a jar on the windowsill, or a question like "what do you already know about soil?" Then let them work through it independently after a quick group example, checking in with a partner if they get stuck, keeping a word bank or anchor chart in view so the vocabulary stays available. When you review, ask students how they knew, and let them point to the part of the diagram or reading that told them. These soil worksheets work well as a lead in before an investigation, as a way to capture what students noticed afterward, or as review before an assessment.
What students will practice
- Identify the components that make up healthy soil
- Compare the properties of sand, clay, and loam soil types
- Explain why soil is an important natural resource for plants and animals

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Write topsoil, subsoil, parent rock and bedrock on a soil cross section. Soil is the loose top layer of the ground where plants grow. The ground under your feet is made of layers. The directions on the page read: Read the word bank. Then, write the name of each numbered layer on its line. The answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this soil worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade Earth and water, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with soil. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What do soil worksheets teach second graders?
⌄
Students learn that soil is made of rock particles, water, air, and organic material in varying proportions, and that different soil types (clay, sand, loam) have different properties that affect what can grow in them. For 7-8 year olds, hands-on observation of real soil samples makes the abstract chemistry concrete.
When do second graders learn about soil?
⌄
Soil science is introduced in Grade 2 Earth science as part of earth materials units, typically alongside rocks and minerals. It also connects to plant science lessons about what plants need to grow, providing a natural cross-topic connection.
How can I use these worksheets at home?
⌄
Dig up a small soil sample from your yard or a nearby park and examine it with a magnifying glass alongside the worksheets. Have your child identify and record what they can see, sand grains, plant roots, worms, pebbles. This direct observation turns worksheet vocabulary into lived scientific experience.
How many 2nd Grade soil worksheets are there?
⌄
2 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
What age are soil worksheets for?
⌄
These are written for 2nd Grade students, roughly ages 7-8. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
Are these soil worksheets aligned to NGSS?
⌄
Yes. Each one shows the NGSS code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
