Earth's biomes

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Earth's biomes" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers NGSS 3-ESS2-2. NGSS does not name biomes at 3rd grade. 3-ESS2-2 is the nearest fit, since it covers climate patterns across different regions of the world. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on earth science, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and earth's biomes never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Earth's biomes

Free printable earth's biomes worksheet for 3rd grade students. Part of our earth's biomes earth science collection. Aligned to NGSS standards.

How do I use this worksheet?

Start with something students can look at or think about: a photo, a short video, a jar on the windowsill, or a question like "what do you already know about earth's biomes?" Then let them work through it independently, using a partner or small group only if they want to talk through their thinking, keeping a word bank or anchor chart in view so the vocabulary stays available. When you review, ask students how they knew, and let them point to the part of the diagram or reading that told them. These earth's biomes worksheets work well as a lead in before an investigation, as a way to capture what students noticed afterward, or as review before an assessment.

What students will practice

  • Identify and describe the major biomes of Earth including climate, plants, and animals
  • Explain how organisms in a given biome are adapted to that biome's conditions
  • Compare two different biomes using at least three characteristics

What does this worksheet teach?

These earth's biomes worksheets for 3rd grade give students a clear, visual way to work through one of the big ideas in earth science. Students label diagrams, sort and classify examples, read short explanations, and answer questions that ask them to say why, not just what. Each page keeps the science vocabulary front and center so students leave with the words they need to talk about earth's biomes accurately. Working through earth's biomes on paper gives 3rd grade students something concrete to hold onto before, during, or after the hands on part of a lesson.

Can I use this earth's biomes worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade earth science, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with earth's biomes. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What does Earth's biomes teach third graders?

Earth's biomes teaches students that different regions of the planet have distinct climates, landforms, and communities of organisms that define them. Third graders learn to identify major biomes, describe their key characteristics, and explain why certain plants and animals are found only in specific biomes. The topic integrates earth science with adaptations and ecosystems content from life science.

When do third graders learn about Earth's biomes?

Biomes are typically introduced in Grade 3 as a cross-cutting topic that bridges earth science and life science units. At ages 8-9, students have enough prior knowledge about animals and habitats to understand biome-level patterns. The topic is especially compelling because it connects students to places around the world they may have seen in books, films, or travel.

How can I use these worksheets at home?

Pick your child's favorite animal and look up together which biome it lives in, then use the worksheet to describe that biome's features. The matching and labeling activities are visual and straightforward for independent work. A colorful world map on the wall that marks the major biomes can turn the worksheet into an ongoing reference that sparks curiosity all year long.

Are these earth's biomes worksheets aligned to NGSS?

Yes. Each one shows the NGSS code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.

Can I use these earth's biomes worksheets for homeschool?
