Snowed In at Grandma's (Story Map)

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Snowed In at Grandma's (Story Map)" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core RL.2.3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on story elements, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and story maps never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this story maps worksheet?

⌄

Have your child read the story, then retell it out loud before writing. Ask them to find the sentence in the story that shows each answer. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read about being snowed in at Grandma's and fill in a story map on lines. A story map shows the main parts of a story from beginning to end. The directions on the page read: Read the story. Then, fill in the story map on page 2. On page 2: Use the story on page 1. Write each part of the story on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this story maps worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade story elements, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with story maps. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a story map?

⌄

A story map lays out the main parts of a story: characters, setting, problem, events and solution. Filling one in helps children see how a story is built.

Why do 2nd grade story maps include a beginning, middle and end?

⌄

Telling the events in order shows how the characters get from the problem to the solution. RL.2.3 asks children to describe how characters respond to major events.

How long are the stories?

⌄

Each original story is 150 to 180 words, one page that a 2nd grader can read in a few minutes.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All ten story maps have an answer key for the story map page.

What story elements do 2nd graders learn?

⌄

2nd graders name the characters, setting, problem and solution, and tell the main events from the beginning, middle and end. They also describe how characters respond to what happens (RL.2.3).

How is a 2nd grade story map different from a 1st grade one?

⌄

The 2nd grade map adds three events in order, beginning, middle and end, and children write their answers on lines instead of a word or a drawing in a box.

Why ask children for a different solution?

⌄

Thinking of another way to fix a problem shows they understood what went wrong, and it builds the planning they will use in their own stories. Any sensible solution counts.
