Ocean Food Chain Cut and Paste

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Ocean Food Chain Cut and Paste" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on animals, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and food chains never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this food chains worksheet?

⌄

Ask your child what each animal eats before gluing. Start every chain with the plant. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Cut out algae, small fish, seal and shark pictures and glue them in an ocean food chain. A food chain shows what eats what. Each arrow points to the living thing that does the eating. The directions on the page read: Read the clue under each box. Then, cut out the pictures at the bottom. Then, glue each one in the right box. The answer key shows every answer.

Can I use this food chains worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade animals, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with food chains. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a food chain?

⌄

A food chain shows what eats what. It starts with a plant, like grass, and each arrow points to the animal that eats it: grass, grasshopper, frog, snake.

Why does a food chain start with a plant?

⌄

Plants make their own food from sunlight. Animals cannot, so they get their energy by eating plants or other animals.

Which way do the arrows point?

⌄

From the food to the eater. The arrow from the acorn points to the mouse because the mouse eats the acorn.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All three food chain sheets have an answer key.

How many 1st Grade food chains worksheets are there?

⌄

3 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

What age are food chains worksheets for?

⌄

These are written for 1st Grade students, roughly ages 6-7. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.

Are these food chains worksheets aligned to NGSS?

⌄

Yes. Each one shows the NGSS code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
