Ocean Food Web, Draw the Arrows
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Ocean Food Web, Draw the Arrows" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on animals, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and food chains never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

2nd grade science worksheet: draw arrows in an ocean food web of kelp, urchins, otters, fish, seals and sharks. Answer key included. Part of our food chains animals collection. Aligned to NGSS standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Start with something students can look at or think about: a photo, a short video, a jar on the windowsill, or a question like "what do you already know about food chains?" Then let them work through it independently after a quick group example, checking in with a partner if they get stuck, keeping a word bank or anchor chart in view so the vocabulary stays available. When you review, ask students how they knew, and let them point to the part of the diagram or reading that told them. These food chains worksheets work well as a lead in before an investigation, as a way to capture what students noticed afterward, or as review before an assessment.
What students will practice
- Build a simple food chain identifying producers, consumers, and decomposers
- Use arrows to show the direction energy flows through a food chain
- Explain what happens to a food chain when one organism is removed

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Draw arrows in an ocean food web of kelp, urchins, otters, fish, seals and sharks. A food web shows many food chains joined together. Each arrow points from a food to the animal that eats it. The directions on the page read: Read who eats what. Then, draw an arrow from each food to the animal that eats it. Then, answer the questions. The answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this food chains worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade animals, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with food chains. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What do food chains worksheets teach second graders?
⌄
Students learn that energy flows from the sun to plants (producers) to plant-eating animals (herbivores) to meat-eating animals (carnivores). For second graders, food chain worksheets typically use familiar animals and clear arrow diagrams to make the concept concrete and manageable.
When do second graders learn about food chains?
⌄
Food chains are typically introduced in Grade 2 life science as part of ecosystem and habitats units. They connect to earlier lessons on what animals eat and extend toward food web concepts introduced in Grade 3 and above.
How can I use these worksheets at home?
⌄
Choose a familiar ecosystem, your backyard, a local pond, or a forest, and work with your child to identify what animals live there and what they eat. Use the worksheets to draw and label the food chains you discover together. Even a simple grass → rabbit → fox chain makes the concept click.
How many 2nd Grade food chains worksheets are there?
⌄
5 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
What age are food chains worksheets for?
⌄
These are written for 2nd Grade students, roughly ages 7-8. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
Are these food chains worksheets aligned to NGSS?
⌄
Yes. Each one shows the NGSS code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
