What Weather Tools Measure
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"What Weather Tools Measure" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on weather and climate, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and temperature and thermometers never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

2nd grade science worksheet: match a thermometer, rain gauge, anemometer and wind vane to what each one measures. Answer key included. Part of our temperature and thermometers weather and climate collection. Aligned to NGSS standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Start with something students can look at or think about: a photo, a short video, a jar on the windowsill, or a question like "what do you already know about temperature and thermometers?" Then let them work through it independently after a quick group example, checking in with a partner if they get stuck, keeping a word bank or anchor chart in view so the vocabulary stays available. When you review, ask students how they knew, and let them point to the part of the diagram or reading that told them. These temperature and thermometers worksheets work well as a lead in before an investigation, as a way to capture what students noticed afterward, or as review before an assessment.
What students will practice
- Read a thermometer accurately to the nearest degree
- Record temperature data over several days and identify patterns
- Explain what temperature tells us about current weather conditions

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Match a thermometer, rain gauge, anemometer and wind vane to what each one measures. A meteorologist is a scientist who studies weather. Weather tools help measure it. The directions on the page read: Read each tool card. Then, draw a line from each tool to what it measures. Then, answer the questions. The answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this temperature and thermometers worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade weather and climate, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with temperature and thermometers. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What do temperature and thermometer worksheets teach second graders?
⌄
Students learn how thermometers work, how to read scales in whole numbers, and how to record temperature observations over time to identify patterns. For 7-8 year olds, reading thermometers is also a cross-curricular math skill that reinforces number sense on a vertical scale.
When do second graders learn about thermometers?
⌄
Temperature measurement is typically introduced in Grade 2 weather science units. It appears in most state standards as both a science measurement skill and a practical life skill, connecting to daily weather observation activities that many Grade 2 classrooms maintain year-round.
How can I use these worksheets at home?
⌄
Get an outdoor thermometer and make daily temperature readings together before school. Use the worksheets to record a week of data, then graph it together. This daily practice builds both thermometer-reading fluency and the habit of scientific data collection.
How many 2nd Grade temperature and thermometers worksheets are there?
⌄
2 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
What age are temperature and thermometers worksheets for?
⌄
These are written for 2nd Grade students, roughly ages 7-8. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
Are these temperature and thermometers worksheets aligned to NGSS?
⌄
Yes. Each one shows the NGSS code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
